Standing for the Lord — Lessons from the Life of Elijah – Part I (11-14-21)

Hymns

This Is Amazing Grace

By: Wickham Phil, Farro Joshua Neil, Riddle Jeremy

1.
Who breaks the power of sin and darkness,
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger?
The King of Glory, The King above all kings!
Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder?
The King of Glory, The King above all kings!

Chorus
This is amazing grace,
This is unfailing love,
That You would take my place,
That You would bear the cross;
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free,
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me.

2.
Who brings our chaos back into order,
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter?
The King of Glory, the King glory!
Who rules the nations with truth and justice,
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance?
The King of Glory, the King above all kings!

Bridge
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
Worthy is the King
Who conquered the grave; (repeat)
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
Worthy, worthy, worthy!

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder

Words: John Newton

1.
Let us love and sing and wonder,
Let us praise the Savior’s Name!
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder,
He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame.
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He has brought us nigh to God.

2.
Let us love the Lord who bought us,
Pitied us when enemies,
Called us by His grace, and taught us,
Gave us ears and gave us eyes:
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He has washed us with His blood,
He presents our souls to God.

3.
Let us sing, though fierce temptation
Threaten hard to bear us down!
For the Lord, our strong Salvation,
Holds in view the conqueror’s crown:
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood
Soon will bring us home to God.

4.
Let us wonder; grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store;
When through grace in Christ our trust is,
Justice smiles and asks no more:
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood,
He who washed us with His blood
Has secured our way to God.

5.
Let us sing and join the chorus,
May our praises fill the sky
Of the One who’s gone before us,
And is seated now on high:
You have washed us with Your blood,
You have washed us with Your blood,
You have washed us with Your blood,
You are worthy, Lamb of God!

6.
Hark! the Name of Jesus, sounded
Loud, from golden harps above!
Lord, we blush, and are confounded,
Faint our praises, cold our love!
Wash our souls and songs with blood,
Wash our souls and songs with blood,
Wash our souls and songs with blood,
For by Thee we come to God.

Speak, Lord, in the Stillness

Words: Emily May Grimes
New tune: Micah Shumway

1.
Speak, Lord, in the stillness,
While I wait on Thee;
Hushed my heart to listen
In expectancy.
Speak, O blessed Master,
In this quiet hour;
Let me see Thy face, Lord,
Feel Thy touch of power.

2.
For the words Thou speakest,
They are life indeed;
Living bread from heaven,
Now my spirit feed!
All to Thee is yielded,
I am not my own;
Blissful, glad surrender,
I am Thine alone.

3.
Speak, Thy servant heareth,
Be not silent, Lord;
Waits my soul upon Thee
For the quickening word.
Fill me with the knowledge
Of Thy glorious will;
All Thine own good pleasure
In Thy child fulfill.

4.
Like a watered garden,
Full of fragrance rare,
Lingering in Thy presence,
Let my life appear.

God’s Intention

Genesis 1:26–27
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over the whole earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth on the earth. 27 And God created Man in his image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Man has spirit and soul

Genesis 2:7
And Jehovah Elohim formed Man, dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and Man became a living soul.

Man is flesh

Genesis 6:3
And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not always plead with Man; for he indeed is flesh; but his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.

God calls Noah and Abraham

Genesis 6:8
But Noah found favour in the eyes of Jehovah.

Genesis 12:1–3
1 And Jehovah had said to Abram, Go out of thy land, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, to the land that I will shew thee. 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee; and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

God considers Israel His wife

Jeremiah 2:2–3
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: I remember for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land not sown. 3 Israel was holiness unto Jehovah, the first-fruits of his increase: all that devour him are guilty; evil shall come upon them, saith Jehovah.

Solomon’s heart turned to other gods

1 Kings 11:4
And it came to pass when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as the heart of David his father.

Ahab, a ruler who did evil in God’s eyes

1 Kings 16:29–34
29 And Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah; and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years. 30 And Ahab the son of Omri wrought evil in the sight of Jehovah more than all that were before him. 31 And it came to pass, as if it was a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshipped him. 32 And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria. 33 And Ahab made the Asherah; and Ahab did more to provoke Jehovah the God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him. 34 In his days Hiel the Bethelite built Jericho; he laid its foundation in Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates in Segub his youngest, according to the word of Jehovah which he spoke through Joshua the son of Nun.

Elijah appears

1 Kings 17:1
And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, As Jehovah the God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except by my word.

Elijah is humbled

1 Kings 17:2-5
 2 And the word of Jehovah came to him saying, 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the torrent Cherith, which is before the Jordan. 4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the torrent; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. 5 And he went and did according to the word of Jehovah; he went and abode by the torrent Cherith, which is before the Jordan.
