How to Navigate Life with Jesus

“For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” Hebrews 2:1 NASB.

Pay Attention Like a Pilot

This verse tells us that we’ve heard something and that our job is to pay close attention to it, otherwise we will drift away. This is a good description of our Christian life. What have we heard? Mainly we have heard about the Son, as chapter 1 of Hebrews shows. The Greek words used in this verse help us paint a picture of what it means to pay attention. “Pay much closer attention” is used to describe a pilot’s concentration as he brings his ship to dock. “Drift away” refers to a river causing a boat to drift down from its intended place.

Floating Down a River

You see, our life is like floating down a river. Christ the Son is there as we float but somehow we become professional degraders of the Son. We float down the river with its problems and think “we only have the Son.” We serve God and see challenges and feel “it’s just me and the Son.” Hebrews uplifts the Son and tells us that we should concentrate on Him like a pilot docking his boat.

What does Hebrews say about the Son? Well, Chapter 1 vs. 1-4 is a good place to start to find out.

God Now Speaks Only Through Jesus

God used to speak in a lot of different ways through many different prophets. However, now God is speaking only through the Son. If you want to hear God speaking, don’t look in your environment, look at the Son. And the Son is incredibly awesome and sufficient. He is heir of all things, God made the ages through Him, He’s the shining of God’s glory, the true character of His nature. He made purification for sins and sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high. He became much better than the angels and inherited a more excellent name than they.

All these descriptions describe the Son as a Heavenly ascended Christ who has accomplished a lot. As God, all things were made through Him and He will inherit all things. As man, He made purification for sins and God made Him sit at His right hand.

Concentrate on Jesus

We may say “we only have the Son” as we float down our river of life. However, this is a recipe for drifting away. We need to look at Him, pay attention to Him, get out of our own things, and explore all that He is. What should we concentrate on in this life? Concentrate on the glories of the Son. This is the way to partake of the Great Salvation God has for us.
