Haggai was a prophet to the Jews who returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. The Jews had started to rebuild the temple but had stopped for about 20 years due to their fear of opposition from the neighbors. Haggai’s prophecy encouraged them to build. He posed the rhetorical question: why are you dissatisfied with your lives? The answer was that they put money into a bag with holes, they did’t have enough to eat, and because they neglected God’s house. So the Lord stirred them up to work on the house. Eventually Christ would come and the glory of the later house will be more than that of the former. The Lord will bless Judah from this day onward.
